Castanea sativa is a deciduous Tree growing to 30 m by 15 m at a medium rate.
It is hardy to zone 5 and is not frost tender. It is in flower in July, and the seeds ripen in October. The species is monoecious and is pollinated by Bees.
It is noted for attracting wildlife.
Suitable for: light , medium and heavy soils, prefers well-drained soil and can grow in nutritionally poor soil. Suitable pH: acid and neutral soils and can grow in very acid soils.
It cannot grow in the shade. It prefers dry or moist soil and can tolerate drought. The plant can tolerate maritime exposure.
