It is hardy to zone 8 and is frost tender. It is in leaf all year, in flower from April to May. The species is monoecious and is pollinated by Wind.
Suitable for: medium and heavy soils. Suitable pH: acid, neutral and basic soils. It can grow in semi-shade or no shade. It prefers moist soil. The plant can tolerates strong winds but not maritime exposure.

Cultivation

Prefers a good deep fertile loam which can be on the stiff side. Young plants tolerate reasonable levels of side shade. Tolerates moderate exposure, surviving well but being somewhat stunted. This species is not hardy in the colder areas of the country, it tolerates temperatures down to between -5 and -10°c. Prefers warmer summers than are usually experienced in Britain, trees often grow poorly in this country and fail to properly ripen their wood resulting in frost damage overwinter. The tree flowers on new growth produced in spring, the seed ripening in its first year. Intolerant of root disturbance, trees should be planted in their permanent positions whilst young. Hybridizes freely with other members of the genus. Plants in this genus are notably resistant to honey fungus.
